It’s Christmastime! Hooray! Christmas is such a fun and special time of year. Who doesn’t love birthday celebrations? We love all kinds of Christmas music. In fact we love it so much that over the next few weeks we’ll be sharing with you 3 different Christmas playlists.  We’ve already shared our favorite Christmas classics playlists. Today we’re going to talk about our favorite “new” Christmas classics and later on we’ll share our favorite “fun” Christmas songs. It’s great to have fun and think about snow and spending time with friends. But, Christmas is Jesus’ birthday and should be a celebration honoring him we don’t want to forget Him! After all the only way we have anything to celebrate is through God’s gifts to us. Since Jesus is definitely the best gift we’ll ever be given, we should make sure to find room for him in all our Christmas traditions. Snow, presents, and cookies are great, but let’s make sure to find lots of room for Jesus in our lives and on our playlists. After all, He gave up everything for us- let’s honor Him by picking music about Him or music that speaks of good clean fun.

We define New Christmas Classics as songs that are considered holiday staples ( even if we are the only people who consider them must haves), but aren’t traditional carols. Or they may be traditional carols, but they may be lesser known than Silent Night or Jingle Bells.

Allow me (Kari) to present our New Christmas Classics Playlist!

All I Want for Christmas Is You- Mariah Carey

This song is so happy! I’ve loved it since I was 12 years old. It’s always been a dream to perform it. Someday when RJ and I have our variety show (Hello, ABC! Call us!), I will perform it!

Blue Christmas- Celine Dion

I love how this version sounds like it should be sung in elegant supper club! It has such a smooth 40s vibe!

Born In Bethlehem- Third Day

This song is so awesome! I love how it tells the beautiful story of Jesus’ life, death and resurrection! Now that’s a celebration!

Breath Of Heaven (Mary’s Song)- Amy Grant

This song has become popular in the past 20 years and I like it a lot. It’s a really good depiction of what Mary must have felt like all those years ago.

Christmas (Baby Please Come Home)- Darlene Love

Darlene Love’s fabulous voice and that great Phil Spector sound really help create a new holiday classic.

Christmas Eve- Celine Dion

It’s a little cheesy, sure. But, it’s a big gift to be in love during the Christmas season. And, I don’t care if it is cheesy- it’s awesome to be RJ’s wife. I love spending Christmas with my family. When I say that I don’t mean with everyone I’m related to, I mean my husband. Someday it will be with my husband and kids. Christmas is still wonderful even while we are waiting because aside from my salvation and life itself: RJ was my best gift from God ever.

Christmas In My Hometown- Travis Tritt

You need a little country music on a good playlist, too. I actually started liking this song because it’s the title song from my favorite television movie.  We watch this movie every year- at least once!

Christmas Time At Home and Christmas Time’s A Comin’- – Rhonda Vincent

You have to have some bluegrass Christmas music and you really can’t go wrong with either of these songs. They are both so happy and fun!

Emmanuel, God With Us- Amy Grant

This song is so nice to listen to when you are busy with “Christmas work” because it’s the perfect blend of relaxing and encouraging.

Feliz Navidad- Jose Feliciano

This song is so fun! Can you even be in a mall, even an overcrowded mall, and not want to sing and dance when hearing this song? I can’t.

I Heard The Bells On Christmas Day- Casting Crowns

The lyrics of this song are based on the beautiful Henry Wadsworth Longfellow poem. It’s a staggering beautiful song. It’s such a good reminder that even when we can’t understand things, that God does and He’s still watching and guiding us.

Les Cloches Du Hamaeu—Celine Dion

It’s in French! And it sounds like a carousel! I’m in!

Merry Christmas- Third Day

This song will break your heart, but it’s so beautiful. I have so many friends who have been blessed from the gift of adoption and friends who are still waiting for their babies. It’s a great reminder of all the children who may not just be wishing for toys but for a family. Show Hope is one of our favorite charities. Even if you don’t feel called to adopt this organization can still be close to your heart. The compassionate and amazing care that they provide to children in China is just amazing to watch.

Merry Christmas, Baby- Otis Redding

I love Otis. He’s one of my favorite artists. This song is so much fun to sing and dance to.

The Night Before Christmas- Amy Grant

This song has such lovely lyrics and I love the children’s choir backing her up!

Rockin’ Around The Christmas Tree- Brenda Lee

I’ve loved this song since the first time that I saw Home Alone. (Secret time: I saw it in the theatre 3 times, I know it’s embarrassing. I was only nine if that helps any. ) It’s jazzy and you know what else it is? It’s merry. The song actually sounds merry!

Snow- White Christmas

I don’t even like snow and this song convinces me for a short period of snow that it’s not so bad. Snow can be fun if we’ve gotten to go the grocery store and RJ is safely home and able to stay home from work. Other than that it’s better to sing about than experience in reality.

Step Into Christmas- Elton John

Sir Elton definitely created a new pop music Christmas standard with this song! Have you ever been in a store, waiting in line and smile because you hear it? It happens to me every year.

Very Merry Christmas- Dave Barnes

I love injecting a little Calypso into Christmas music! Plus the lyrics are so sweet!

We Need A Little Christmas- The New Christy Minstrels

It’s another song from a musical! This song has totally become a new classic in the world of Christmas music. And this new version has that great old variety show choral sound!

White Christmas- The Drifters

White Christmas is such an awesome song. The Motown quartet sound really gives the song a kick. I love the Otis Redding version, too. But, be careful that one will break your heart.

Enjoy this Christmas season! Check back for more of our playlists and viewing lists- we’ll be sharing them soon! Make sure to reflect on the reason for the celebration of this beautiful season!

Merry Christmas!
