She Said: Freddy’s Steakburgers and Frozen Custard
While I do love living in Northern Virginia, I’m always bemoaning the fact that I don’t think that there are any good hamburger places in the area. I know some people love Five Guys, but I get sick every time that I eat there. Sure, the food tastes pretty good, but I don’t want to pay good money so that RJ and I can get sick. I was so thrilled when RJ told me about Freddy’s Steakburgers and Frozen Custard! We were so tired when we came home from the Travel & Adventure Show (which we’ll share all about on Wednesday) that I thought a burger and frozen custard would hit the spot! It did! It was delicious and didn’t upset my stomach at all! I’m totally crazy about this place.
Freddy’s is a darling retro style place (the location we visited is in Fairfax, VA) that focuses on serving food with 1950’s emphasis on quality burgers, fries and frozen custard. I love the décor. 1950’s style furniture is always my favorite for an eating space. I love the red booths, red painted exposed ductwork and the pictures of Freddy’s life story all over the restaurant. Everyone that we encountered was friendly and helpful. Great service always makes for such a nice dinging experience. Best of all they do have a drive-through! Yes! A restaurant that makes good food with a drive through! Did I mention that I’m crazy about this place?
I ordered a hot dog with just ketchup (that’s the way that I like them- don’t laugh) and it was good. The hot dog had a bit more snap than I am used to, but I didn’t mind. It was tasty and I really liked the nice toasted bun that it was served on. The Freddy’s Fries are shoestring style (my favorite) and delicious! I tried some of RJ’s burger and I’ll be order that from now on! It was thin, perfectly cooked, nicely caramelized and served on a very tasty bun. RJ ordered it with pickles, cheese, mustard and bacon. I was skeptical about the mustard, because I’m not usually a fan, but it made the burger even more delicious adding just the right amount of bitterness! I love this hamburger so much. It really reminded me of the hamburger we had in Morristown, TN from Crazy Good Burgers!
The vanilla custard was AMAZING! It was so sweet, but not too sweet, and it was so creamy. I got a waffle cone of this mellow sweet treat. The cone itself was delicious, too. I couldn’t believe that the size I was given was a single scoop because it was enormous. I ordered it with hot fudge on the side, which I was told to dip the cone into. It didn’t really work well, but when I switched to spooning it over the top in tiny dots it was wonderful! I absolutely loved it. I did not like the chocolate custard at all though. RJ ordered some kind of sundae with it and brownies. I thought both the custard and the brownies tasted synthetic, sharp, flat and bitter.
I really like this place and I definitely plan on going back. It’s cute, fun and they have good burgers, fries and frozen custard! I’m so glad that we were able to try the delicious food and rest our weary feet. I’m so glad to have a place to get a burger in my area. Welcome to Fairfax, Freddy’s! Everyone is going to love you!

He Said: Freddy’s Frozen Custard and Steakburgers
Summer is still a long way off, but cravings for ice cream can still strike at any time. Yes, we go to Pinkberry even when it’s very cold, but sometimes I just want something different. Enter Freddy’s Frozen Custard and Steakburgers. Freddy’s just opened in Fairfax so Kari and I tried it this weekend.
Kari ordered the hotdog. It was a really good hot dog. It had a little more snap to it than you would expect for this price level. It felt like a higher quality dog that you would need to go to an actual hot dog cart in Chicago to get. The bun was also different and tasty. It was buttered which added a nice note to the bite of the bun and hot dog together.
For dessert she ordered a single scoop of vanilla custard in a waffle cone. Both were amazing. The custard is light and creamy and delicious. I could eat gallons of this stuff! Just point me to their freezer! The waffle cone had just the right level of sweetness. It was also huge. They don’t skimp on servings here!
I got the bacon and cheese double steakburger. It was really good. The patties were perfectly cooked, and were seasoned perfectly. There were little crunchy bits around the edges that were amazing! The pickle and mustard complimented the meat very well, and the bacon was also very well cooked. The bun was unremarkable, but unobtrusive to the burger as a whole, which is a good thing. I wouldn’t order a single here, but the double is just right. The fries were crispy where they should be, and moist where they should be. When paired with their seasoning, it’s wonderful. The only downside is that you have to add the seasoning yourself, so it wouldn’t work as well if you’re taking advantage of the drive through.
I had the Chocolate Brownie delight sundae. It was good, but not as good as Kari’s cone. The custard was almost as delicious. The brownie had a good taste, but was a little dry. I enjoyed the cherry, but there wasn’t very much whipped cream, and there was no hot fudge on top as the picture suggests on the website. There was some on top of the brownie, but not as much as I would have hoped. Maybe it works better as a concrete (their take on a milkshake)?
Don’t let the drive through fool you, the feel and quality is in keeping with fast casual burger restaurants, but we’ve been much more fortunate with Freddy’s as well about how it treats our stomachs. This place is awesome! I’m already trying to figure out the next time I can go back.
