Couples with Style Naomi Watts and Liev Schreiber
Today we are debuting a new feature: Couples with Style. RJ and I (Kari) both love fashion and we love to check out the red carpet to see what our favorite performers are wearing. There are so many celebrity couples whose personal style we admire that it seemed like a natural fit to write about them! This post will feature our thoughts on a couple that just happen to be some of the best actors working today: Naomi Watts and Liev Schreiber
She Said: Naomi Watts
I first discovered Naomi Watts in the same way that I discover most new actresses, through my favorite magazine: In Style. Because we have pretty strict standards about what movies we’ll watch I don’t always see her movies. But, I thought she was amazing in King Kong and The Impossible. Naomi Watts has great personal style too, and I always look forward to seeing her on the red carpet. I usually love the clothes that she wears when photographed in personal life as well.
I believe that there are 3 major categories that every woman has to think about for her wardrobe- red carpet (or special occasion), professional clothes (which also include church clothes and slightly dressy events) and casual life clothes (which includes everything from grocery shopping to working out). Naomi Watts is very inspirational to me in all three of these areas for a variety of reasons.
In the past year Naomi got to walk the red carpet as a high-profile nominee and wore some amazing dresses. Her Armani Prive Oscar dress was stunning, as was the Pucci gown that she wore to the after parties. She wore a burgundy colored Zac Posen to the Golden Globes that I initially was ambivalent toward, but now feel quite drawn to. I loved the Roland Mouret dress that she wore to the Kennedy Center Honors. Both its structure and color were stunning!
Her red carpet style is always interesting because she’s not afraid to take risks and at the same time she also knows some looks that work for her.
She looks great in 1930s style gowns
And dresses with unique details such as the shoulder bows on this Marchesa dress.
She’s also knows how to wear menswear-inspired clothes that are also very feminine such as this beautiful cream Stella McCartney ensemble and this slightly funky Dolce and Gabbana suit.
For me, professional clothes are my favorite area to shop for. Red carpet clothes are dreamy but not things that I actually buy (yet!) and casual clothes are necessary but not always the most fun. I love to shop for things to wear for when we cover events for the blog, auditions and for church. Naomi’s style for more business events is inspirational to me because she has a style that a feel relates to my own.
She wears wonderful ladylike dresses. These dresses work for all kind of occasions and situations. Naomi looks great whether wearing a floral Erdem, tweed Chanel or a Roland Mouret dress.
She brings her flair for feminine menswear-inspired outfits to her professional clothes as well. Black is always chic!
I find great inspiration for the professional clothes in this outfit that utilizes dressy shorts. Yes, thankfully as someone who works in the arts and media I’m able to wear dressy shorts as professional wear on some occasions. Although I know many women couldn’t wear it to work it could be a great brunch or party outfit. The combination of color, texture and keeping the right amount of skin covered makes it a wonderful outfit that any woman could recreate.
I know I said that ultra-casual clothes aren’t the most fun things to shop for, but it doesn’t mean that they aren’t still fun buy! Casual clothing can be really comfortable, but if it’s flattering and stylish then it’s even better!
Naomi has a great every-day style for running errands and spending time with her kids- in every season!
She even has a flair for picking great workout clothes!
She loves stripes just like I do!
I want to be a mommy and we’ve been trying to start a family for a very long time. I love how Naomi still keeps her funky personal style when pregnant and post-partum and it’s a big inspiration to me!
I hope this is exactly what our family picture will look like in a few years.
Because we have standards about personal modesty it isn’t always easy to find inspiration from celebrities we are stricter than some and more relaxed in some areas than others- we just base it off of prayer and tuning our hearts to discern from the Holy Spirit what we hope is appropriate. I’m always happy when I can find someone whose style inspires me! Naomi Watts’ style definitely inspires me- does anyone want to go shopping?
He Said Liev Schreiber
I was really excited when Kari came up with this idea for a feature because it turns out that Liev has some great style! I hadn’t ever stopped to think about it before. I love his acting, but hadn’t realized how much I mention his red carpet appearances. Looking deeper, I found that I liked a lot of his other looks too.
Liev is really good at dressing for red carpet events. He looks good in a traditional tux and bowtie or a straight tie. He’s also a great example of when to dress down a little, but not too much. No matter how formal he knows to always keep the tailoring sharp and fitted properly.
Another neat thing about Liev’s style choices are his use of vests and cardigans. Naomi_watts-9-300.jpg) I’ve been very vocal about my love of vests, but until Liev I wasn’t a big fan of cardigans. He has somehow managed to balance volume of cardigan and once again fit for the best possible outcome.
I also love his casual attire. While he does t-shirt and jeans well, what really shines is when he dials it up just a notch for a casual look that is a cut above like a pink button up shirt with khaki shorts on vacation or rocking a cap and jeans.
My favorite thing, which I’m definitely going to emulate about his style, is his use of jackets off of the red carpet especially when paired with an eye-catching scarf or bright shirt.
I could see myself in any of his blazers.
Now that he’s inspired me so much, I can’t wait to go and buy some of that fabulous menswear.
