Fashion Desk: 2013 Emmy Awards

She Said:

2013 is certainly not going to be remembered as one of my favorite years. Just as I was starting to physically recover from our miscarriage of Taylor, then I get a massive sinus inflammation. Thankfully, I didn’t get full-blown ill until we were back from an audition (thanks for that, God!), but I (Kari) have been really sick for the past week. Maybe everyone else has already talked about the dresses from the 65th Annual Primetime Emmy Awards, but I still want a chance to talk about them. The Emmys are such a big award show that it’s always a treat to see the big gowns and new color trends on the red carpet. So, let’s forget about tissues, ice packs and medicine (okay, maybe that’s just me) and escape to the red carpet of the Emmys!

Best Dressed

Sarah Silverman

She bought it online for $60! I have to give her a massive amount of credit just for that. It’s a little low cut for me, but other than that it looks great. It’s not a gown, but if you aren’t a gown person, than a look like this is a great option.

Julianna Margulies in Reed Krakoff

The beautiful black detail, along with the side draping really makes this white column dress interesting.

Kelly Osbourne in Jenny Packham

The color is lovely. Jenny is a master at draping and this dress shows off her skills. The beading is also lovely.

Carrie Underwood in Romona Keveza

I love the beautiful purple material and I even think the black belt is fun, retro touch.

Julia Louis-Dreyfus in Monique Lhuillier

This dress is so sparkly and so classic. She looks fabulous!  Perfect hair, makeup and accessories, too!

Alison Williams in Ralph Lauren

I love this dress! The color is gorgeous and the silhouette is so classic and feminine. This dress is tied for best dress of the night for me!

Anna Chlumsky in Badgley Mischka

This gown is stunning. I love the rich green color, the fit, the beading and of course- the peplum! I really love this gown and it’s tied for best dress of the evening!

Dress Messes

January Jones in Givenchy

I don’t like this sad, matronly color. The whole dress is just kind of sad and looks like old Home Interiors curtains or tablecloths.

Jessica Pare in Oscar de la Renta

The color is lovely, but the fit is not. The giant, floppy, crooked bow is not figure flattering.

Amanda Peet in Erdem

Oh Amanda, you’ve always been a red carpet favorite of mine, but nothing about this works. The dress is terrible and looks like a witch costume or cheap nightie. Messy ponytails are fine for watching television, but aren’t great for being on it.

Julianne Hough in Jenny Packham

I usually love Jenny Packham dresses, but this appears to be a dance costume and not a dress. I hate the completely sheer skirt and ill-fitting body suit combination. This isn’t even a pretty dance costume and it’s a total failure as an evening gown.

Paula Abdul

Pleated and ruched gold lame is never a good thing. Especially in a mock neck evening gown.

Michelle Dockery in Prada

I don’t like the colors or fit of this ensemble.  Her hair looks lovely, but I don’t like anything about her outfit.

Lena Dunham in Prada

This print is hideous. The background color is ugly and so are the flowers. This dress is completely unflattering in everything from fabric to the piping on the bodice.

Zosia Mamet in Honor

Repeat with me- “Bras go under dresses, not on top of them”. The print of this dress actually looks really interesting but all I can focus on is that ill-fitting black bra tacked on the front of the gown.

Almost Successes

Zooey Deschanel in J. Mendel

I love the color and fabric of this dress. I just really didn’t like the dramatic side slit, which ruined the dress for me when I saw it in motion. I also don’t like how low the keyhole in the front of the dress is. I too rock a lot of polka dots and vintage and see Zooey as a celebrity avatar.  A keyhole that low is just a not a friend to a curvy and modest vintage girl.

Alyson Hannigan in Marchesa

The purple is a lovely color on her. But, the ruching and slightly asymmetrical bodice aren’t flattering. The dress just doesn’t fit well and is obviously bucking in the hips and stomach. She’s such a pretty girl and the designer should have made sure that her gown fit in a flattering way.

Cobie Smulders in J. Mendel

Again, the dress is a lovely color. This dress fits well, but what’s up with that weird little seaming detail along the bust. It’s just odd and distracting. Without it, this dress could have been a winner.

Kaley Cuoco in Vera Wang

Well, her hair and makeup look nice. I like the burgundy color and the texture of this ball gown. But, I don’t like the bra top and sheer stomach of the bust. It doesn’t fit well and makes the look too busy by having both a busy top and bottom of the dress.

He Said:

Everyone knows at this point, that the fashion for men at established awards shows typically can be a little boring for me.  Bu, this year the men attending the Emmy’s for the most part did a good job showing a wide variety of looks.

Best

Bryan Cranston proved that classic can be a good choice with his straightforward tux.

Aaron Paul punched up the color a little bit with the color of his suit, and it looks good.

Tracy Morgan showed a real sense of style with this black shirt, and patterned tie.  It fits great too.

Nolan Gould always looks good at awards shows.  I love the bowtie and the cufflinks.

Worst

RJ Mitte’s suit doesn’t fit well, and the tie is too skinny.

Evan Peters looks like he’s wearing a costume and it winds up looking too much, and it doesn’t fit well besides.

The He Said She Said Experience- Fashion Desk- 2013 Emmys- Evan Peters

Zachary Quinto’s mostly black suit falls apart because of the grey accent color, and the piping on his jacket.

The He Said She Said Experience- Fashion Desk- 2013 Emmys- Zachary Quinto

Eric Stonestreet should have gotten a larger size in tux.  The jacket clearly doesn’t fit, and the pants are sitting too low.

Almost

Jon Hamm’s suit has a good fit, but the bow tie looks sloppy.

So that’s the Emmy’s.  It was pretty good red carpet, fashionwise.  What do you think about the fashion on the red carpet?  Any surprises?  Let us know in the comments below!
