One of my favorite childhood Christmas memories is thinking about my Grandma and how she always made her wonderful homemade candy for Christmas Eve. We may not all have liked her meatloaf, not everyone could agree on her pickled beets, but everyone loved her homemade candy. Whenever I think of Christmas, her fudge and haystack candy are some of the first things that come to mind.  I love to make candy too now, but since RJ and I have such different palates and we are only two people it isn’t always possible to make a wide variety of candies. I’m always excited to learn about places like The Sugar Cube, where it’s possible to get good quality chocolates and treats!

The Sugar Cube makes many of their own treats (more on that in a minute), but they do offer a nice variety of jellybeans and some very exotic chocolate bars. It’s a feast for the eyes and RJ could have happily looked around for hours!

We were able to sample a few of the wonderful house made items and they were very good. The thing that I liked most about the treats was the packaging. I know that may sound silly, but I really appreciate the attractiveness and the thought that goes into their packaging. Not only are their treats wrapped up and ready to go looking cute, but also they are so well labeled! How many times have you gotten a food gift and you have had the following problems:

  • A.     You don’t know what ingredients are in it (As a person with a lot of food allergies, this a big deal for me)
  • B.     You don’t know how long it will keep
  • C.     You don’t even remember what it is (This is bad, but it has happened to me before)

One of the reasons that treats from The Sugar Cube will make a wonderful holiday gift is because of their packaging. Not only do you a clearly marked label for what the item is, they also have use by date and an ingredient list. Thank you ladies for making holiday treats a little easier for all the food allergy sufferers!

Now, that I’ve told you about my favorite part of all their treats I must tell you about my favorite treat itself. As cute and well packaged as their sweets are, they are also playful and flavorful. The salted caramels are amazing! They are a perfect blend of slightly crunchy salt melded with a gooey, chewy flow of silky caramel. I really did not want to share these with RJ, so if you are buying them as a gift I would suggest getting a bag for the drive home for yourself. They are so tasty!

I look forward to visiting the Sugar Cube again and look forward to sampling more of their AH-mazing caramels and trying more treats!

There are lots of cute shops in Old Town Alexandria, and The Sugar Cube is certainly one of them.  They may look small on the outside, but they have lots of interesting candies on the inside.

We sampled three different kinds: peppermint fudge, salted caramels, and their homemade marshmallows.

I loved the Peppermint Bark Fudge.  Lots of places offer fudge, but it’s hard to find good fudge.  In this instance there was a layer of chocolate fudge on the bottom, and then a layer of peppermint fudge on top, with little crunches of peppermint candy in the top layer as well.  The taste was not overpowering, and you could still get the taste of the chocolate in the fudge as well.  It was very tasty.

The Salted Caramels were amazing.  I can’t tell you the number of times Kari and I have tried things labeled “salted caramel” that had very little salt flavor to them at all.  These had a great saltiness to them, and the saltiness was throughout the caramel, not just on the outside as we’ve seen other places.  These were super yummy.

I can’t wait to visit Old Town Alexandria and The Sugar Cube again!
