Playlists: Favorite Songs of 2013

We sing everywhere, all the time, even the grocery store and when we go vote early in the morning. And 2013 was a great year for music, so we were singing a lot!
We sing everywhere, all the time, even the grocery store and when we go vote early in the morning. And 2013 was a great year for music, so we were singing a lot!

We love music and know year-end review would be complete without our favorite music from the year. Here are our favorite songs of 2013:

“Cups (Pitch Perfect’s “When I’m Gone”)” by Anna Kendrick

It’s just so catchy!  I (Kari) am totally committed to learning how to actually play this.

“What a Friend We Have in Jesus” by Steven Curtis Chapman featuring Ricky Skaggs

This is a lovely, slightly updated and very much bluegrass orientated cover of this classic hymn.

“Keep on Lovin’ You” by We Are Twin

This song has such a great blend of two great elements from 60’s music: catchy, pop beat and soulful, yet upbeat performance.

“If I Didn’t Have You” by Thompson Square

This ballad is so dramatic and romantic.

“Pumpin Blood” by NONONO

This song is so energizing and inspirational. We always whistle along with it in the car, or try to (we can’t whistle very well).

“Gone, Gone, Gone” by Phillip Phillips

This song was very inspirational to RJ when we lost our sweet baby girl, Taylor.

“When I Was Your Man” by Bruno Mars

Just a beautiful, wistful love song

“Brave” by Sara Bareilles

This song is truly inspirational and was a song that we clung to in 2013.

“Bleeding Out” by The Lone Bellow

This song stunned us when we first heard The Lone Bellow perform this beautiful, hopeful song on The Tonight Show earlier this year.

“Roar” by Katy Perry

This song was Kari’s theme song of 2013.  It helped me through losing Taylor and so many of the challenges that we faced in 2013!

“Overcomer” by Mandisa

A fantastically inspirational and true song, but don’t watch the video if you aren’t prepared to shed a few tears!

“Wake Me Up (Acoustic)” by Aloe Blacc

Some prefer the dance version of this song, we prefer the acoustic.

“See You Tonight” by Scotty McCreery

This song is so much fun and we actually got to see Scotty perform it live!

“Say Something” by A Great Big World & Christina Aguilera

It’s a treat to hear Christina do something so simple. Can we please have more music from A Great Big World and Christina?

“Cool Kids”  Echosmith

This song is so California, 80’s pop and features such great lyrics. Can’t wait to hear more from these guys!

“Just Give Me a Reason” by Pink featuring Nate Ruess

Our favorite 2013 “let’s sing in the car” duet

“You Never Let Go” by AJ Michalka featuring James Denton

Grace Unplugged was a great movie and this song is one of the best tracks from the album. It may be a cover of a song from a few years ago, but it’s so powerful.

“The Way We Touch” by We Are Twin

We Are Twin rocks! Yes, this is their 2nd song on our favorites of 2013. They have such a unique sound and we look forward to hearing more of their music.

“Highway Don’t Care” by Tim McGraw featuring Taylor Swift & Keith Urban

Every summer has a big anthem and this was our summer of 2013 anthem.

“Sweet Annie” by Zac Brown Band

Melancholy yet hopeful, contemplative and gorgeous, this song really hits so many emotions.

Our favorite new artist of the year is Alexi Blue. I (Kari) discovered her beautiful and haunting cover of “Little Talks” (with Corey Gray) and it truly helped me recover from losing our Taylor. “Roar” was also a big song for me and Alexi’s cover of that is also fantastic. This girl is so talented. Her voice is lovely and earnest and we’re convinced that she could do an amazing version of any song, original or cover. Thanks for all the great music Alexi, and cheers to a rockin’ 2014! ( You can check Alexi Blue out on her on YouTube channel here)
