I have so many questions as a new mom and I’m always seeking out answers for them. One topic that I find myself doing research about over and over is baby food. I’ve read tons of articles and blog posts trying to piece together what to make and when to serve. In The Amazing Make- Ahead Baby Food Book: Make 3 months of Homemade Purees in 3 hours (published by Ten Speed Press), Dr. Lisa Barrangou seeks to arm parents with the ability to both select and create food for their babies.
The Amazing Make-Ahead Baby Food Book is filled with information on nutrition for babies and recipes that parents can make. She breaks down a lot of kitchen basics from terms and prep trips. The best parts of the book are the helpful charts. Some of the charts tell you what foods work well together and meal plans. But, the best charts are the ones that tell you step by step how to create 3 months of baby food in 3 hours. I love that Dr. Barrangou tells the reader which steps to take in every hour to achieve the results. I don’t know if in my small kitchen and limited kitchenware it would be manageable at 3 hours. But, I’m eager to try it and see if it works. I’m sure that being so methodical will definitely increase my productivity. All the steps are laid out for you so it takes the guesswork out of making baby food.
While The Amazing Make-Ahead Baby Food Book begins focusing on purées for young babies, it also does a good job of explaining the nutritional needs of older eaters and includes recipes for older babies too. I do wish that the book had focused on more portable food.
The food photography in The Amazing Make-Ahead Baby Food Book by Erin Scott is lush and inviting, they makes me want to cook. Even my 8-month-old son loves looking at the pictures of the fruits and veggies, so it becomes a fun book to look at together.
I enjoyed reading The Amazing Make-Ahead Baby Food Book and I hope I get the time to try some of the recipes and take advantage of some lovely summer produce. This would be a great shower or baby gift. I would have loved the time to prepare when Baby G was smaller!
Kari Liked: I love how Dr. Barrangou breaks down a cooking plan to show how to maximize your time and baby food output.
Kari Didn’t Like: Overall I enjoyed The Amazing Make-Ahead Baby Food Book. But, I would have liked more information about incorporating spices or making food that was travel-friendly.
