Every year for the past five years, the Vienna Volunteer Fire Department put on Taste of Vienna as a fund raising food festival for their valiant efforts. This year featured a mix of new restaurants and established area favorites, and we had a great time. And the food was amazing!
Here are our picks for Best Bites from the 5th Annual Taste of Vienna:
Kari: I loved my classic Fraise Amour. You can’t be the nutty and chocolaty richness of Nutella paired with strawberries in a fluffy crepe.
RJ: Crepe Amour has the best crepes I’ve ever had and this signature flavor featuring Nutella and strawberries never disappoints.
Kari: This is one of my favorite pizza places! I’m glad we got to share it for the first time with G too. The sauce is spicy, the crust is thin and tender and the provolone gives the pizza an extra richness.
RJ: Donatos pizza is just flat out amazing pizza. We get it every time, and will continue to get it every time, because it’s that good and not even up for discussion.
Kari: I love the different layers and textures in the opera cake. But, the salted caramel macaron stole the show for me. I actually went back for seconds.
Chipotle Dusted Chicharonnes from Taco Bambo Taqueria
RJ: These chicaronnes were so tasty and smoky! This was far from your run of the mill pork rind and was a really great snack.
Rueben Bites from Paddy Barry’s Irish Pub and Restaurant
RJ: The night before Taste of Vienna, I was watching Diners, Drive-ins and Dives and Guy Fieri was at a restaurant that served Rueben bites, and they looked pretty good. These were amazing. Not to sound like Guy, but I could have eaten a dozen of these
Kari: I’m very picky about burgers, but I ADORED these sliders. They were juicy, meaty and topped with delicious housemade pickles. The bun is perfect for soaking up the juices and not getting soggy. These sliders are the best I’ve ever had.
RJ:I heard a few people say that they weren’t going to wait in such a long line for a burger. They’ve clearly never had the clean flavorful product that Social Burger cranks out. It’s so good I waited in thatline not once, but twice.
The Candy Drawer Confectionary
Kari: The pretzel caramel was out of this world, and I really enjoyed the Scottish Butter Fudge. If you like butterscotch, you have to try this deep, rich, crumbly fudge. And look how pretty all the candies are! Aren’t they adorable?
Kari: When I read the description of the event vendors I couldn’t wait to visit this the stall for this food truck. After all, who doesn’t love ice pops and waffles? But Mr. MacFreeze totally exceeded my super-high hopes! The waffles are sweet, eggy and have a delightful texture. While I’m perfectly happy to eat one with just a light coating of powdered sugar, the apple pie a la mode waffle is sensational. To make this dazzling creation, A delicious waffle is further adorned by apples, ice cream and a pineapple sauce so good I would drink it. I cannot say enough good things about these waffles. G adored the waffles too. But, I loved the ice pops more. I know, right? But they are amazing. So fresh, so flavorful and filled with fruit chunks just the right size and texture. I’m still dreaming about my strawberry lemon pop.
RJ: Best surprise of the day was Mr. MacFreeze. I was dubious of their pops, but then I saw one and was curious. Then I tasted one, and am addicted. Their waffle is also incredible. They’ve got some great secret in that waffle dough that makes it taste very unique.
The Taste of Vienna festival is great for families. G loved people watching and sampling some of the yummy food. When he’s a little older I’m sure he’ll love the bounce house too.
Thanks to the VVFD for putting on such a great event. We’re already looking forward to next year!
