I (Kari) have a love/hate relationship with some Disney films. As someone who has always wanted to be a mother, as well as some who struggled with infertility for 11 years- I don’t like how moms in Disney movies get treated sometimes. I hate that Aurora and Rapunzel are taken away from their mothers and the opening of Finding Nemo devastated me. In spite of how upsetting I found the opening scene I couldn’t deny the beauty, charm and humor of the movie. Plus, I love Dory- she’s such a sweetheart! I can’t tell you how many times I’ve actually told myself “just keep swimming” in the past ten years. I was thrilled to get to attend a preview screening of Finding Dory. Here are 5 reasons that I think make Finding Dory even better than Finding Nemo.
The Voice Acting
Ellen Degeneres and Albert Brooks as Dory and Marlin prove again in Finding Dory that they are both extremely talented in a broad scope of acting.
But, there are also new standouts in the voice acting department from Ed O’Neil, Diane Keaton, Eugene Levy and even small role standouts from Kate McKinnon, Bill Hader and Sigourney Weaver.
I love ocean creatures. So I adore the new characters of Bailey (a neurotic beluga whale, voiced by Ty Burrell) and Destiny (an exuberant whale shark, voiced by Kaitlin Olson) and even Hank (a curmudgeonly octopus voiced by Ed O’Neil), they add so much fun and humor to the story.
I love the story of this movie. Dory, our favorite forgetful fish has remembered that she has a family and wants to go find them. Audiences are taken on a beautiful, colorful ride with both familiar and new characters to understand more about family and what makes each of us so special. Finding Dory has a perfect balance of humor and suspense sure to delight a child of any age.
Sia’s voice is so stunning and her version of “Unforgettable” that plays over the credits will keep you glued to your seat.
I love Disney short films and Piper is a new stunning edition to that elite stable. It’s so beautifully animated it’s almost hard to believe that it’s not documentary footage. Audiences will fall in love with this plucky sandpiper!
So there are 5 of the reasons that Finding Dory is even better than Finding Nemo. And there are so many things that I didn’t even get to mention. The seals are scene-stealers, tiny Dory in the flashbacks is the cutest thing you’ll ever see, why I can’t stop calling my son kelpcake (you’ll learn why when you see the movie) and all the moments that tie the two movies together. Often times a sequel can leave audiences cold and longing for the original work, but Finding Dory meets and surpasses the goals set forth in Finding Nemo. It wins with more heart, more fun and a stronger message for children and parents alike. Do not miss this movie!
Kari Liked: I loved the sweet story so much. It made me laugh, it made me cry and I can’t think of much higher praise to give to a film.
Kari Didn’t Like: I really, really enjoyed Finding Dory and I can’t think of a major flaw in it. Disney has truly done a phenomenal job with this film.
Finding Dory is in theaters nationwide, today- June 17th. I can’t wait to take RJ and G to see it! Check out more information about Finding Dory here.
(I won tickets to an advanced screening hosted by the distributor of this film, however all opinions are my own. All images are from the official Facebook page of Finding Dory)
