One of the best things about the holidays is spending time with friends and family. We recently had the privilege of attending the taping of a gathering of some of figure skating’s finest and their families for Mussleman’s Apple Sauce Family Skating Tribute 2016 produced by Disson Skating and part of the Colgate On Ice series.
It was such a special event. Champion figure skaters actually perform routines with their children and it also features live music for much of the show. It was so cute seeing little ones get to enjoy the spotlight and show off some pretty impressive skills. G had fun playing ball backstage with Signey, but he LOVED watching her skate an awesome, full of tricks number to “It’s a Small World” with her parents Jodeyne Higgins & Sean Rice. It’s easy to love seeing little ones perform, but the kids weren’t the only ones enjoying the spotlight at Musselman’s Apple Sauce Family Skating Tribute 2016.
I’m not much a country music fan these days, so I wasn’t really familiar with the artist performing at the event Dan+Shay. I really enjoyed both Nancy Kerrigan’s performance to their song “Lipstick,” Todd Eldrege’s peformance to “How Not To” and Sinead & John Kerr’s performance to “Sway.” And if you didn’t smile and say “awwww” at the end of Paul Wylie’s performance to “19 You and Me,” well then you must be totally unsentimental!
There were so many great performances from the skaters and their families that it’s hard to pick favorites. Sinead Kerr-Marshall & John Marshall really had the crowd going with “Disco Inferno.” Nancy Kerrigan and her children did a fantastic job of entertaining the crowd and being absolutely adorable. I’ve loved watching these family skating shows for years and I have always told RJ that one of my skating fan dreams was to get to see the Wylie family do a routine together. They always have such great programs. I’m a huge fan of Steven Curtis Chapman and their family program to his hit song “Cinderella” was so beautiful. It made me snuggle my little handsome prince close and try to soak in these moments of having a little one in the house even more.
I have to give this show really high marks for entertainment, because I can truly say that I laughed, I cried and appreciated all those little nuggets skating alongside their super-talented family members. Don’t miss the Musselman’s Apple Sauce Family Skating Tribute 2016, it’s bound to be a highlight of your day and great way to celebrate the holidays.
Kari Liked: I loved so many numbers, especially the ones featuring Paul Wylie, Nancy Kerrigan and Sinead Kerr-Marshall (interview here) & John Kerr (interview here). I really enjoyed the marvelous skating and cute kids in the Musselman’s Apple Sauce Family Skating Tribute 2016.
Kari Didn’t Like: Some of the imagery on the video screens from Dan+ Shay’s music performance was much too sensual and suggestive for a family show. But, thankfully the ice was full of great things to see!
Every year, the cutest show that Disson Skating produces is Musselman’s Apple Sauce Family Skating Tribute. It’s always great to see what our favorite skaters will do with their children. It’s super fun to see what kind of stories they can tell with family members that haven’t made a career on blades.
This year was no exception. Jodeyne Higgins and Sean Rice performed a super cute number with their little girl to “It’s a Small World.” Paul Wylie skated an incredibly sweet number with his family about their daughter, “Cinderella.” Sinead Marshall-Kerr and John Kerr danced their high energy “Disco Inferno” routine. My favorite number of the whole night was the great Meaghan Trainor/ High School Musical 3 mashup that Nancy Kerrigan’s family skated to.
It was so much fun, and it was great to get to see these skaters that we love, both with their children. This show was very enjoyable, and I can’t wait to catch it on television as well!
RJ Liked: The different ways that the families worked the children into performances
RJ Didn’t Like: I wasn’t familiar with Dan + Shay, and wasn’t a big fan of their music.
